The row of buttons along the top allows units to change their status without talking on the radio.  This clears the air for important radio traffic.

The map displays street names, addresses, the closest fire hydrants, emergency landing zones for helicopters and even routes units from their current location to the call they have been dispatched to.

Instead of non essential radio traffic tying up valuable “air space” units can message each other kind of like an instant chat or E-mail service.
